Purplish dark rings, brownish rings, puffy eyes, we've all been there. This article aims to throw some light on the subject and hopefully give you some options in minimising or eradicating these pesky, "in your face", skin ailments.
As we get older, our skin naturally loses elasticity and factors such as dirt, pollution and lack of hydration, speed the aging process of the skin up.
On our faces, aging signs show up in the eye area because it is in this area that the skin is quite thin, and by default more vulnerable.
These under-eye skin probs will inevitably show up the older we get, however, most of them can be prevented or minimised if addressed early.
There are different kinds of under eye skin problems that we will encounter which are affected by things like aging, lifestyle and skin type.
Different types of skin
A person’s skin type has everything to do with how their skin ages. It's irrelevant if a person has dry, normal, oily or combination skin each type of skin is vulnerable to different skin problems.
Oily and dry skins are on opposite ends of the “skin type spectrum”. This means that while oily skin is more vulnerable to acne, dry skin is more prone to tightness, flaking, and wrinkles.
Wrinkles, Crows Feet & Under-Eye Wrinkles
We all get wrinkles sooner or later, they are a result of constant facial movements, having oily skin doesnt mean you won't get them, although, those with dry skin may get them sooner. This process can be delayed by constant moisturizing the skin and eye area, drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep.
Crows Feet are often known as 'smile lines' are basically around the eye area. Again like all form of wrinkles moisturising can delay their appearance
Under-Eye Wrinkles could appear because of tugging, rubbing and the stretching that can goes on when you put on/take off make-up. Keeping to a good moisturising routine can help prevent them appearing before time.
Puffy Bags
There are certain types of under-eye probs which can be avoided as they tend to be caused by lack of sleep and hydration. For example, ones eyes have a tendancy to appear swollen, bloodshot and watery if you don't get proper rest. You also would tend to scratch or rub the eye area more if tired, leading to many of the probs we mentioned at beginning of article. Oh my God! I sound like my grandmother!!!
However, that is not to say that there are not other factors involved here:
Dark circles and bags under eyes can be caused, like we've just mentioned, by lack of sleep and hydration, but they can also be caused by:
Genetics - It may run in the family and natural remedies may not work very well.
Evironment - Too much sun is not good for the skin, it can cause under-eye circles as well as other skin related problems.
Eating Habits - In our fast and furious lives, eating often takes second place, It is important not to under-estimate the importance of plenty of fruit and veg for healthy skin.
Allergies - I don't need to tell you that nose congestion and hay fever and big contributers to dark, puffy eyes.
Natural Aging - Sometimes as we age, the fat pads under eye may begin to shrink, exposing more of the blood vessels underneath.
Make-up - Horses-for-courses, use the right make-up for your skin type and ensure you clean your make-up off before bedtime.
Too much salt, alcohol and smoking - Now I do sound like my grandmother!! The retention of fluids in the blood vessels can be caused by too much of the above, again you would be more likely to suffer from dark rings and puffy eyes. If you don't believe me, just look in the mirror the morning after an alcohol fuelled night out.
Women can often add concealing make-up to hide the problem. But there are other things you could do:
Unde-eye cream Helps lots. Apply before going to bed and during the day, ours has natural ingredients that not only tackle puffiness but also dark rings.
Just because you're older doesn't mean you have to look it. You can look younger by taking care of your skin. Prevention and damage control are all important here.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS:
Have a skin regime and stick to it - look at our recommended one by clicking here.
Drink lots of water during the day, plenty of sleep, good food and slow down on the alcohol.
