Coconut activated charcoal, Bentonite clay? WTF.
There are roughly 12 different clays used in beauty and all have the ability to remove impurities from skin’s surface, but out of these, we tend to opt for four: White Kaolin, Bentonite, French Green, and Moroccan Rhassoul. Although we will try most over the course of time. Want to know the skin care benefits of each of these different clays for your skin type? Keep reading.
White Kaolin Clay for Dry & Sensitive Skin
Rocks that are rich in kaolinite are called kaolin. Better known as China or white clay, this is the mildest of all the clays. It is less powerful at drawing out oil and impurities—making it perfect for dry and sensitive skins. Its a gentle cleanser and exfoliator, helping to remove impurities without drying the skin.
Even though white kaolin clay is not as powerful as bentonite, it is still absorbent and it clears the pores. It pulls the excess oils from the skin and helps to balance the oil production in the long run. By removing excess oils from the skin, kaolin also helps to reduce excess shine on your skin.
What’s more, by clearing pores and removing impurities from the skin, kaolin helps to minimize acne. It removes all that may cause acne. We use it in our Olive, Neem & Pine Tar Doggy Soap - 110g + - For Normal or Problem Dog Skin, Natural Deodorants, Shaving Soap - For Most Skin Types.
Bentonite Clay for Oily Skin
Is made from volcanic ash. It is one of the most powerful healing clays that we know. It has incredible health and skin benefits. It is a natural aid in acne, oily skin. It can heal wounds, cuts, bruises, and insect bites. It also helps with migraines and the list goes on and on. You can apply it both topically or take it internally.
It’s best recommended for oily, problematic skin. We wouldn’t advise you to use bentonite clay for sensitive skin. it’s very very drying! You can add bentonite to foot baths, face masks (this is my fave), deodorants, and many other skincare recipes.
Hugely absorbent, Bentonite is the opposite end of the spectrum from white clay, and its powerful absorption makes it perfect for oily skin. We love this type of clay, as it not only gives our skin a deep, clarifying cleanse but it can also work to remove the environmental aggressors that we are faced with every day from our skin’s surface. It also gives incredible slip to shaving soap, helping to give wonderful smooth wet shave. We use it two of our products; Shaving Soap - Most Skin Types & our Skin Detox Shampoo Bar
French Green Clay for Oily & Acne-Prone Skin
Being both rich in minerals and phytonutrients, and effective at drawing out impurities, French Green clay is a prized ingredient. In addition to its detoxifying attributes, French Green clay can also be highly absorbent—which makes the clay great for oily or acne-prone skin, as it can work to clarify the complexion.
Moroccan Rhassoul Clay for All Skin Types
Super fine in texture and packed with skin-essential magnesium—as well as a host of other minerals—Rhassoul is a potent detoxifier that can replenish critical minerals, from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. It also has a high negative charge which enables it to draw blackheads and impurities from the skin. Because it is high in minerals such as silica, magnesium, and potassium, it is wonderful for hair, skin, and nails. Rhassoul clay changes the colour of your soap to beige. We use it in our Sunflower & Coconut Milk Shampoo Bar.
Activated Coconut Charcoal
Is a fine black powder made from coconut shells. The charcoal is activated by processing it at very high temperatures. The high temperatures change its internal structure, reducing the size of its pores and increasing its surface area, this results in a charcoal that is more porous than regular charcoal.
Activated charcoal draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other micro-particles to the surface of skin, helping you to achieve a flawless complexion and fight acne. Charcoal is not metabolized, adsorbed or absorbed by the body. Activated charcoal powder is proven to adsorb thousands of times its own mass in harmful substances, which makes is why we use it in our Skin Detox Shampoo Bar.
Now you know why we add these clays and charcoal to our soaps and deodorants.
